Kodak's EasyShare Max Z990 12MP Digital Camera (Black) is well-named: a 30x optical zoom is pretty much the "Max" for a compact consumer digital camera. But it's not only the lens that makes this camera a contender.
A 12MP CMOS sensor that has improved performance in low-light situations, a large, bright 3" LCD monitor, full 1080 HD video, and the option of shooting in the advanced RAW format are all reasons to take a closer look. And, the 30x zoom includes a 28mm wide-angle (the lens is a 28-840mm (equivalent) Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon with a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8-f/5.6). Combined with optical image stabilization and ISO sensitivity up to 6400 (ISO 12800 at 3.1MP resolution), you'll get sharp, clear pictures even in dim light.
The Z990 brings lots of other sophisticated features usually found in DSLRs, as well--a Program, Aperture, Shutter and Manual dial, plus RAW format (which can give dramatically better results using post-processing software), scene modes that can optimize settings for a variety of common subjects...
